The Royster Student Scholarship Award Program

> Generously Provided By Larry and Julia <

Summary

This is a chapter-run poster competition held once a year for a total of $5000 in scholarships. Full-time graduate students enrolled in a program involving acoustics, or senior undergraduate students expecting to enroll in such a program, are eligible to submit entries. Details and rules are presented below.

Entry and Eligibility Requirements

1. Posters may be on any Hearing Conservation or Noise Control topic including:

  1. Education
  2. Sound Surveys
  3. Engineering and Administrative Controls
  4. Hearing Protection
  5. Audiometric Evaluations

So a vast number of potential acoustic project areas are covered. From doing psychological studies on how to better inform the impacted individuals to developing math-model/computer based data analysis techniques.

2. A maximum of two (2) poster competitions will be supported annually

a. If two ASA regional chapters hold competitions in a given calendar year, the winner of each competition will receive a $2500 scholarship

b. If a single ASA regional chapter holds the competition during the year, the chapter may decide to award a single $5000 scholarship or to award two separate $2500 scholarships (if the judging results in two equally meritorious poster presentations).

c. The amount of the scholarship for a winning poster shall not be less than $2500

d. If the winning poster results from the efforts of multiple students, the award normally will be split equally among the student authors (unless the supporting regional chapter has on hand a letter signed by all the authors, requesting a modified distribution of the scholarship among the participants).

3. The competition shall follow these rules:

a. Only competitions with a minimum of five (5) eligible entries qualify for participation in the Royster Scholarship Award program

b. The regional chapter responsible for organizing the competition will appoint at least three (3) judges, as well as an individual who will be responsible for ensuring that all relevant information is gathered and submitted to the Committee on Regional Chapters and the national ASA office.

c. Judging will be based on scientific merit, the apparent future potential of the student(s) to contribute to the general field of acoustics, and relevance of the presentation to the scope of the competition.

d. Students formally enrolled at an accredited institution of higher learning and are able to use the scholarship by the following academic year of full-time graduate studies in a program that includes acoustics in the curriculum, are eligible to submit entries. Submitted entries must be accompanied by evidence that satisfies the judges of the student's eligibility.

e. A summary paper should be submitted to the Royster competition coordinator of the chapter, by each poster entry, one week before the competition to allow judges to become familiar with the expected posters and to ensure that the minimum number of eligible entries is reached.

f. Each poster should be visually self-explanatory, should also include a 3-5 page summary paper covering the contents of the poster, and may be accompanied by a demonstration or talk. The judges, in making their final decision, should also consider this summary and demonstration or talk.

4. Regional chapters interested in organizing a poster competition must inform the Committee on Regional Chapters prior, or at, the Spring ASA meeting.

a. At the Spring ASA national meeting, the Committee of Regional Chapters will select the chapters eligible to have a Royster competition during the following calendar year. This allows advertisement and other considerations to be aligned with the school year.

b. If more than two chapters request to hold the competition in the same year, preference will be given to those that have not held competitions recently.

5. After the competition, the organizing chapter must submit to the chair of the Committee on Regional Chapters, in writing or by email:

a. The names and contact information for all authors of winning entries, with confirmation of eligibility and assurance that all will be enrolled in their present institution for at least one of the next two academic terms.

b. Titles(s) of the winning entry or entries.

c. A list of the judges with contact information

d. Digital photographs of the event and each poster entry

6. The scholarship award will be given to the winning students' school to be applied against expenses of full-time graduate study in a program that includes acoustics. The winner(s) must report to the competition coordinator the contact information for the university officer that would be responsible for administering the scholarship funds.

7. Within three months of graduation, the winner(s) of this scholarship will provide to either Larry or Julie Royster, 4706 Connell Dr., Raleigh, NC 27612 a copy of their thesis or project report.

8. The Committee of Regional Chapters of the Acoustical Society of America will consider some formal method of rating the institutions that have received or will receive funds to support a student's activities. In instances where the awardee does not produce a worthwhile product, future awards to students from this institution shall be questioned. In other words, did the student (institution) deserve the ward in the first place?

9. It is the desires of the Roysters that the above guidelines, etc. shall not be used to prevent the awarding of one of the scholarships to a student (selected institution) who exhibits very outstanding potential to contribute to the general areas of an effective hearing conservation program!
